Never short of an opinion or two on the nags! Vautour fav horse, Cheltenham fav Festival, 2017 Mares fav race #FlatforShowNationalHuntForDough 🐎 Est.2026
The peak of Sir Gino’s career appears to have been taken by various injuries and it got me thinking of others who’d suffered similar or more tragic fates with stardom in their grasp in the National Hunt sphere. A thread. #WhatCouldHaveBeen
Bacio wins the Palace of Holyroodhouse in a faster time than Mission Central won the King Charles III and carrying 4lbs more. How can you not love a Wesley Ward winner! Great for the game.
Always delighted for a big Seamie Heffernan winner. The man built one of the great racing CV’s as 2nd jockey at Ballydoyle and it’s lovely to see him still banging in big winners on the grandest stage!
No winner on the first two days for James Doyle or David Egan, representing big spending owners who specifically target this meeting. Must be feeling the pressure heading into Day 3 tomorrow!
Very flat performance from Daryz. Broke perfectly and had the plum sit all the way round. Will be very surprised if he’s seen on these shores or on Good to Firm ground again. Appeared not to let himself down on it, back to prepping for an Arc repeat I suspect.
Side angle: What price would Calandagan have been had he skipped the Coronation Cup and run in the POW instead of Daryz? I suspect he’d have been favourite or at least JF with Ombudsman. Graffard has been on record saying Daryz is better than Calandagan…price looks big.
Rewatching Great Barrier Reefs Coventry win. Remarkable performance from his draw, has come right the way across the track to beat those on the stand side with the far side horses toiling. Could be a proper horse that one!
I really do hope Daryz does the business tomorrow and in serious style. The Northern hemisphere desperately needs a proper bona fide superstar and he is the only candidate in my opinion.
On Ground he’s by Sea The Stars who loved it quick and the dam, whilst very good on soft, did win on quickish ground in Hong Kong. York was a write off and too big an ask for an immature backwards horse that had made its debut only 4 months earlier…and not due to the ground.
Is it just me who cannot understand how Daryz is such a big price? It can’t be purely on ground and his one poor start when travelling overseas. I think this horse has as much talent as any 10f horse since Baaeed & any 12f horse since his sire Sea The Stars.
If you look back through his form, Gamrai is a weak finisher. 4 time beaten fav in 7 starts, twice at very short odds and today got the dream trip up the rail whereas the winner had to come wide, 2lbs better off than last time and still got beat. Very talented but soft.
Serious questions re the integrity of the sport when something like that happens on the big stage. Reaching High “kept” for the race, obviously well handicapped, the most recognisable connections & a hot favourite. Occasional punters will punt and punt it & never stood a chance.
@joshtoole91 Quality of thoroughbreds in Europe seems to be generally on the decline. A few standouts but the crops seem to be getting worse and worse.
First Ascot thoughts: 1) How bad are the older milers…goodness me! 2) Where Love Lives has had two almighty form boosts in the last few weeks. Runs in The Norfolk on Saturday.
A controversial incident at Yarmouth.
After rearing up at the start, Wrist Art was deemed a runner by the stewards in the 5.03pm contest.
Thankfully, both horse and jockey are all OK.
