Yesterday, I had the privilege of presenting on the importance of integrating Nutrition with Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) during the 2nd Town Hall Engagement on National Cleaning Days in Jinja, organized by the Ministry of Health and Water For People.

Good nutrition goes beyond eating healthy foods. Our bodies need clean water, proper sanitation, and good hygiene to absorb nutrients, prevent infections, and stay healthy. Unsafe water and poor sanitation increase the risk of diarrhoeal diseases, which reduce nutrient absorption and contribute to malnutrition, especially among children and other vulnerable groups.

National Cleaning Days provide an opportunity to promote healthy environments that support better nutrition outcomes. Clean homes, clean communities, safe water, handwashing with soap, proper waste management, and food hygiene all work together to prevent disease and improve health.

Integrating WASH and Nutrition is a practical, cost-effective approach to building healthier families and stronger communities. Together, we can reduce preventable illnesses, improve nutrition, and create a healthier Uganda for everyone.
