If your friends only find out about your marriage, relocation, travels or other major life changes after the fact, what kind of community are we actually building? This hyper-individualistic approach to relationships isn’t helping us. We’re becoming so obsessed with autonomy and protecting ourselves from hypothetical betrayal that we’re losing the intimacy, mutual care and sense of responsibility that make community possible.

You guys don’t want to tell your friends your travel plans, don’t want to let them know you’re getting married and somehow you’re still calling these people your friends. There’s a certain level of entitlement that is actually necessary in genuine friendships. If you believe your friends are monitoring spirits or witches who will somehow ruin your plans simply because they know about them before they happen, then perhaps they’re not really your friends. Please let us start using the word ACQUAINTANCE more.
