What Trump just did to FIFA isn't politics — it's outright extortion, and it has no damn place in sports. This isn't leadership; it's the behavior of a tin-pot strongman who treats international sporting bodies like his personal errand boys. It doesn't just expose Trump's sleazy corruption — it lays bare FIFA's spineless, bought-and-paid-for rot as well.

The scandal exploded when Trump personally leaned on FIFA President Gianni Infantino to overturn the automatic one-match suspension handed to American player Folarin Balogun after he received a red card against Bosnia. Everyone knows the rule: red card equals sit the next one out. That's football 101. But rules apparently don't apply when the U.S. President picks up the phone and makes demands.

The European Union is livid, and rightly so. European Commission spokeswoman Eva Hrncirova tried to keep it diplomatic, saying they "respect the autonomy of sport" and expect decisions to be based on "objective and transparent criteria." But even she couldn't hide the contempt for this blatant interference.

UEFA didn’t bother with the soft gloves. Their statement was brutal: the decision to suspend the implementation of Balogun's suspension "crossed a red line." They reminded the world that football — like any real sport — depends on rules for fair, honest competition. In this case, there was no room for "interpretation." It was a straight-up fix.

European Commissioner for Sport Glenn Micallef was even more direct on X: sporting decisions belong to sporting bodies, not politicians. Any pressure from elected officials "undermines the autonomy of sport." Translation: keep your grubby hands off the game.

And let's not pretend this came out of nowhere. Infantino's shameless coziness with Trump has been an open scandal for months — the lavish mutual back-scratching, the grotesque creation of a brand-new "FIFA Peace Prize" hurriedly cooked up and handed to Trump after he spent weeks publicly whining about not getting a Nobel. It's pathetic. It's embarrassing. It's everything that's wrong with both men and the institutions willing to bend the knee to them.

This isn't about one player. It's about the complete erosion of integrity in global sport. When the President of the United States can call up FIFA and get a red card magically erased, the game isn't just compromised — it’s dead. Fair play is now for sale to the highest bully in the room.

I never thought I'd see the day when American leadership would stoop this low over a football match. But here we are. And the world is watching in contempt.

Jack Smith spent two years building the most serious federal cases against a president in American history. He indicted on classified documents and January 6. Both were dismissed when Trump took office. A federal judge has since permanently blocked the release of his classified documents report.

He said Thursday that the United States is facing an attack on the rule of law different in kind and scope from anything he has seen in his lifetime. He said judges can no longer trust the Justice Department as currently constituted. He said prosecutors in Minnesota refused retribution orders against families of people ICE shot earlier this year. And he said the pardons for January 6 participants send one message to those pardoned and a second, equally troubling message to every federal law enforcement officer watching.

Smith doesn't have political ambitions. He has no book to sell. He resigned, saw his work buried, and is doing press on the eve of the 250th to say what he believes the record requires.
