The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has initiated a campaign to recruit up to 2,500 new magistrates, focusing on younger and working-age individuals to enhance diversity. Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood aims to increase the number of magistrates to 17,000, allowing them to handle more serious cases and alleviate prison overcrowding. Currently, only 5% of magistrates are under 40, prompting calls for a more representative judiciary. Tom Franklin, chief executive of the Magistrates' Association, stressed the need for "individuals from currently underrepresented groups" to reflect the communities served.
