Well. It's been about three weeks since I've touched the editing so I might as well come clean.
I'm currently in the process of recovering from an addiction.
I've dealt with a porn addiction for far longer than I'd like to admit. I've stopped. Apparently one of the withdraw symptoms is brain fog, which has sure as shit been true. I've been on autopilot for about two weeks now.
But it's one of those things I just have to do. Been feeling better and working my way out of it. I'll be back to it soon. Didn't expect to get knocked on my ass by the withdraw, but hey. Worth it.
Be back soon, guys.
Former Army Major Shelane Etchison. Military police officer who deployed first to Ramadi as a platoon leader and company XO. Then selected for the inaugural Cultural Support Team cohort, 20 women cleared to deploy alongside 75th Ranger Regiment and Navy SEAL elements on combat missions in Atghanistan.
The CST mission was built around a tactical problem the GWOT exposed early. Afghan cultural norms made it impossible for male operators to search, question, or interact with Afghan women on the objective without compromising the mission and inflaming the local population. CST operators solved that by going on the X with the assault force. Female engagement.
Searches. Tactical HUMINT. Sensitive site exploitation in the female spaces of the compound.
Etchison served in Helmand with the Rangers, contributed to HVT packages, and later worked alongside Kurdish female fighters during operations against ISIS in Syria. That deployment was what pushed her toward economic development work in the region after she left the Army.
Since May is Mental Awareness Month, I’ll post various hypotheticals that can bring on Moral Injury. Here’s the first scenario:
A soldier in an urban combat operation receives intelligence that insurgents are using a civilian building as a base. Under time pressure and rules of engagement, the unit calls in an airstrike or a strike drone. Later, they discover that the building primarily housed a family with children, and several non-combatants were killed. The soldier who identified the target replays the decision endlessly: "I should have double-checked the intel. Those kids died because of me." This leads to intense guilt and self-condemnation, in which he feels personally responsible and morally culpable, even if the broader context (fog of war, faulty, or old intelligence) was not entirely his fault.
Can you relate to this soldier’s replaying in his head those words, “should have”?
I am sad to report that the recent episode of 'Behind The Pen' will be the last.
I'm doing more VA gigs and I have a lot on my plate, with an upcoming medical class and needing to start actually working on my audiobooks now that I have a place to. (Pics later.)
This means I need to take a couple irons out of the fire in order to make sure the other ones can get heated up. 'Behind The Pen' has been fun to do and I've been able to meet several awesome authors, but unfortunately it's going to have to end so I can pursue the rest of my stuff.
But stay tuned for more voiced segments and audiobook teasers!
For my civilian friends, a touch of Memorial Day etiquette. Memorial Day is for those that never had the opportunity to take their uniforms off. Remember, this day is not about BBQs, but the sacrifices made by those individuals to give us our freedoms and keep our families safe.
@pureMetatron "Our belief in a willing sacrifice who conquered death because He loves us is the same as the belief that a greedy parasite that got murdered by following instinct."
Ola is a moron.
“I can’t stand these AI witch hunts so I’m going to start using it!” - people who were already going to use it but want to sound edgy and controversial lol
Invented? Maybe not.
Revolutionized and created the modern concept as we know it so basically every fantasy book since then is in their shadow?
Yes.
Also if that's the ONLY THING in my statement you can find to disagree with, I think I'm still ahead. Cheers.
Iranian politician Romina Pourmokhtari:
“Pedophilia is legal under the Islamic Republic of Iran. They legalized child marriage with girls even younger than 13.
“We are trying to raise awareness, but Western feminists are completely ignoring us.”
Hear, hear!
Armies getting swallowed by the earth itself, epic battles against impossible odds, fire torching pursuers, heroes, villains, true love, bitter hatred...
The Bible is OG, thank you very much. Let's not forget those who CREATED fantasy and set the bar that we all struggle to meet (and don't get there, honestly) which was J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis (respect!) were BOTH devout and lifelong Christians.
I had the pleasure of joining @RunyaMahtan's podcast to talk books, writing, and other ramblings. 😁
And if you'd also like to hear my amateurish attempt at recording the first chapter of A Song of Bones in audio, well, buddy, you're in luck! This podcast has it all! 😅
The next episode of Behind The Pen is up on Spotify and Patreon! There's a small announcement with it. I am joined by Isaac Anderson, @zoofries to talk about 'Certainty of Blood'
I published my first book and did nothing to market it.
I told myself the writing would speak for itself... It didn't.
After publishing six books, here's what I learned ⬇️
