JioHotstar sold thousands of crores of ad inventory this year.
Not one rupee of it was bought on SEC segments.
Think about that. The biggest ad deals in Indian media history were done on views, impressions and reach. Meanwhile our television ratings system still speaks in male, female, SEC A, SEC B.

Advertisers moved on years ago. YouTube and Meta have been selling on views and impressions for over a decade. Real-time dashboards. Census-level counts. Not a panel in sight. Every marketer in India already lives in that world.

And here's the bigger problem. TV is still measured by a panel. Even the expanded target of 1.2 lakh metered homes is a sample standing in for crores of TV households. Digital platforms count every second watched on their own servers. And they report their own numbers. No other advertising medium in India grades its own homework.

The fix is not a bigger panel. The fix is API access.

Mandate every OTT, CTV and digital video platform to give the accredited measurement body real-time API access to aggregated, anonymised viewership data. Put one watermark on every beam. Measure the content, not the pipe.

One programme. ONe streaming Channel. One number. Every screen. Call it the CRP. The Content Rating Point.

No more sample of thousands. A census in crores. Real time. Impossible to influence, because there is no panel left to influence.

NO INVESTMENT IN METERS AND ACQUIRING HOSUEHOLDS.

The Television Ratings Policy 2026 already says measurement must be technology-neutral. The door is open.

Time to walk through it.
