On this day in 1810, Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig wed Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen (what a name). To celebrate the October 12 nuptials, the Prince organized a public horserace five days later in a small meadow outside Munich, spawning what is now know as Oktoberfest
