In the recent school board elections, Florida voters rejected the racist book-banning agenda championed by Governor Ron DeSantis and Moms for Liberty. Two DeSantis appointees seeking re-election were ousted, while only 3 of the 14 M4L-backed candidates secured victories. Even in deeply Republican counties, many M4L candidates were defeated.

As critical school board elections unfold across the nation, we face a choice: we can vote to silence diverse stories and accurate historical narratives, or we can vote to free our children to learn about themselves and our multiracial society. We can vote for elected officials who ban antiracist books, thereby leaving our children vulnerable to the message that there’s something special or wrong about them because of the color of their skin. Or we can protect our children by electing officials who defend antiracist books that actively teach our little ones that no person should be judged by their skin color; that all the different colors within the human rainbow are equal. I’m glad more Floridians voted for protecting our children, for providing them with the freedom to read.
