@Stampseeds@FarmingSmarter Our farm uses topography to make VRI maps. Best predictors of water needs are lighter/eroded soil on hilltops can’t hold as much water, low spots with more topsoil get too much in big rain events. Soil texture maps are second for us. The more complex the map, the harder to verify
@soilecologyUMan It seems important to define the starting point. I think it would be achievable if we have a baseline that doesn’t use any BMPs like variable rate, split application and soil testing. Nitrogen stabilizers and other technologies can also do a lot to reduce the losses.
@cpfarmsltd@ZonderlandAg@adamweber3 @NickPloeg Chicken and egg situation. Need demand to justify expense involved with sizing and higher planting rates but also need availability for growers to buy if they want it. Worth talking to your seed grower if you want to try! Whole seed can be a joy to plant if sized properly
@DuaneHolm1@SpudSmartMag The skin heals but it doesn’t look like it would if you had top killed or completely died off naturally. Almost all process potatoes are dug ‘green’ in Manitoba and they suberize/heal in the bin with humidity and temperature control.
The last of the potatoes for harvest 2020 at Swansfleet are these processing Umatilla. 31 days straight, probably a record on our farm. Thankful if was a safe and quick harvest!
@VisserFarmer @andrewdegroot84 Would love to see some more sizer pictures. What is it capable of in terms of different size ranges and how many categories can be sized out at once?
