Depends on when the house was built. I had a house built in 1950 with the water meter in the garage. We weren't home during the day so the quarterly attempts to read the meter usually failed, they mailed us a card to self-read the meter and did estimated billing until they got the correct numbers. This usually resulted in a shocking bill when they reconciled .
Early 2000s we had to let them in to install a remote sensor the meter reader could read with a tool from outside the house.
Where i am now, meters are in a box at the street and all connected via wifi or Bluetooth they get daily numbers and can detect leaks/continuously running water.
@AEM_1981@TheDude5294@shipwreckedcrew Well they should, currently it's basically impossible to convict a Democrat of anything in D.C. but that entire district is a mess with biased judges. Disband the D.C judicial district. Congress could do it, weak gop leadership won't touch it.
In a perfect world, if there's a political angle to the crime/prosecution, then the venue would be moved to a district that voted ~51/49% or so, to give a decent chance of a balanced jury.
But we don't live in that world. Just getting trials like that out of D.C and Manhattan would be a great first step.
@TheDude5294@shipwreckedcrew At minimum, if a jury pool voted 95% for one party then it's automatic change of venue (regardless of if the accused is on the winning or loosing side of that equation) .
@MartinSzerment Apparently the math works, heat radiation is a function of temperature, higher temp->more radiation. it's a solvable problem. I think the current biggest challenge is the cost per pound to orbit...and Elon is working on that.
@whiti31633@GuntherEagleman Unfortunately, in this case it's taxpayers that would be paying the fine.
I think the guy used a stolen ssn, but that doesn't mean it isn't detectable.
It was the structure of the contracts. Most were some form of "costs plus" which means they literally had no incentive to reduce costs because their profits were a function of total costs. When spacex signed a contract '$X per launch' the incentive is on them to reduce their internal costs to make some (or more ) profit.
@tanpukunokami@TryRebootnIt State of Maryland hits up for ~$300/year per car. We pay more because our plug-in hybrid doesn't use much gas. --- I did the math we are getting royaly screwed because we don't drive a huge number of miles. The extra reg fee is way more than the fuel taxes if we had a SUV.
@MichaelDChaney@davepl1968 As an ex Microsoft guy, he's confused because of the tendency M$ has to incorporate apps into the OS as a method of killing competitors.
@davepl1968 Most likely there's a newer version of the program, but a) would require upgrading expensive machines that still work just fine and b) it's only available as a subscription and requires full internet connection for no reason other than license verification.
@ayesha_fatiima Additional point: Linux users generally have a better understanding of security and are far less likely to click a random install link that appears as a pop-up.
@ShaunStromb@KeenanPeachy Without a parliamentary system where minority parties get some seats, no 3rd party will ever have significant success in this country.
I'd support discarding congressional districts for such a system, but nobody in power ever will.
@OtherSide61@Kshi_nippon Actually, I've seen these in rural areas all over the place. Just needs to be outside the city. Although, seeing a camera monitoring the stand is also getting pretty common.
