@geryrrs Poor Arithon goes through SO MUCH. Hell, every character does. It’s rough. Seems to have held up pretty well too! Wasn’t sure I’d still like it as an adult. More shocked in retrospect I made it through as a kid!

@geryrrs I think a lot of WoT fans would also enjoy The Wars of Light and Shadow series. Lots of differences, but complex characters, complex world building, super tortured main character. I’m rereading it for the first time since high school right now!

Wait no, it was my science or math teacher. And I got the first few books for Christmas that year, so I was 11. In retrospect, it’s WILD I made it through that book. Talk about learning curve! Plus some dense prose.

I think this might have been my first big epic fantasy series. My 6th grade English teacher had Peril’s Gate in the classroom library, so I definitely started it before any Sanderson or Malazan. I don’t remember when I started Wheel of Time, but probably high school.

Lysaer’s sense of justice being twisted by the curse was infuriating to read in high school, but is even more so now. Reads very self-righteous conservative asshole to me now. Worst possible interpretation of everything Arithon does.
