THE GREAT CONTROVERSY BETWEEN CHRIST AND SATAN is a war between diametrically opposite characters and governing principles. You and I are on the one side or the other, not by religious profession and church affiliation, but by virtue of the character and principles by which we operate in relation to others. This is why the most surprising twist in history will be that point at which countless “Christians” will present themselves before Jesus as His followers, expecting entrance into His eternal kingdom, and He will say to them, to their utter shock and horror, “I never knew you; depart from Me” (Matthew 7:23).
The great controversy between Christ in Satan is, in the final analysis, the great controversy between love and selfishness. Therefore, this war is always going on wherever you look, whether on the screen or in the mirror. These two modes of being are constantly pushing against one another within all individual lives and within all collective systems.
According to the biblical narrative, love is inherently superior to selfishness. This was conclusively demonstrated in Christ, in whom the great showdown between good and evil happened before the whole onlooking universe. The Cross of Calvary was the high noon of eternal history, for both humans and angels. Love and selfishness stood face to face in mortal combat, and love gained the victory. Jesus came to our world as the embodiment of unselfish love, and the forces of evil coalesced into a singularity of selfish hatred against Him. By voluntarily laying down His life at the hands of His enemies without retaliation, with forgiveness on His quivering lips, Jesus enacted and ratified the law of love in the face of pure, raw, unmitigated evil. At farthest point of love’s greatest possible extremity, He chose His enemies over Himself and thereby broke the cycle of hatred and violence.
In Christ, love has already triumphed over selfishness, ensuring that love will finally and entirely extinguish evil. In the great final outcome of all things, love will reign forever and ever as the one and only eternally sustainable principle of existence.
Now, then, if that's the big picture, we can easily discern what's happening in our world at all levels and easily deduce the part we are called upon to play in every conflict of life.
