#RDC #M23: Le gouvernement congolais a lancé un appel au calme en réponse aux manifestations contre l'agression rwandaise dont certaines, ont dégénéré en scènes de pillages. For more than a quarter century Rwanda has smuggled Congolese minerals, earning a reputation as a chief predator, pillager and profiteer in the Great Lakes region. Over the last decade, Rwanda has produced only modest amounts of tantalum, tungsten and tin, and operates a gold refinery in Kigali despite having no real gold production. Nevertheless, Rwanda manages to steadily sell those laundered minerals (3TG) to downstream actors in the global supply chain. Rwanda is a leading global supplier of tantalum, a derivative of coltan. International smelters, refiners & electronic component/capacitor manufacturers buy minerals from Rwanda. These companies in turn sell their 'conflict-free' products to Big Tech giants such as Apple, Motorola & Microsoft, and to defense contractors and aviation companies, all of which pat themselves on the back for supposedly sourcing minerals responsibly and respecting due diligence norms. Yet all these companies, which commercialize minerals 'from Rwanda', have been informed for years that Rwanda stokes violence in Congo and smuggles 3TG from the Kivus and Ituri. The third-party audits the global supply chain relies on are a scam. This international mineral trade with (and through) Rwanda is therefore criminal. Commercializing Congolese minerals that have been trafficked to Rwanda amounts to trade-based money laundering. Big tech, and the aeronautics and defense industries risk being held liable for their actions. In a rare confession, Paul Kagame has admitted that Rwanda is a transit hub for smuggled Congolese minerals; he points the finger at countries and downstream actors in the supply chain. He is sick of the hypocrisy (he's right on this point). Perhaps the solution for consumers after all this fraud and violence is to shame industry players into boycotting Rwanda, and buying from Congo directly.
