These past 7 days have, for the 32nd time since the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, confronted us with the unbearable: testimonies riddled with horror and helplessness, images of cruelty beyond comprehension, of lives taken with a brutality that defies language.

And yet, among what we saw, the quietest images endure the longest and leave us with questions unanswered. Faces full of light, of promise, of lives that should have unfolded differently.

For years, I wrestled with one question: is this remembrance about death, or about life? Are the victims defined by how they died, or by how they lived?

Today, I have my answer.
Kwibuka is not about centering death, because death gives the last word to those who destroyed.
It is about honoring life. The dreams interrupted, the laughter silenced, the futures stolen.
To remember is to refuse that erasure. To live fully is to carry them forward.

I am deeply encouraged by the #Inkotanyi spirit that is alive and well among us. I have watched our generation refuse, with clarity and courage, to let our history be distorted. I have seen young people rise to teach, to speak, and to hold the line. There is a strength in that: a deeply Rwandan resilience that does not bend, even when everything around it tries to shake it.
