Is college still worth it? Absolutely. For a thoughtful and evidence-heavy argument about the costs and benefits of a college education, check out David Hummel's recent post on Finding Equilibrium.

In his new book, No Adult Left Behind: How Politics Hijacks Education Policy and Hurts Kids, Prof. Vladimir Kogan argues that one reason schools struggle to provide a high-quality education is that students & parents have the least say in how they’re run.

Professor Sarah Hayford co-authored a study suggesting that about half of women who want children are unsure if they will follow through. Complicated feelings and many nuances point to there being no simple answer to the declining birth rate in the U.S.

Congratulations to Dave Melamed for receiving the Goodman Award from the ASA Methodology Section, given annually to a researcher within 15 years of obtaining the PhD.
OSU social/behavioral science units take pride in methodological innovation. Dave is critical to this effort.
Congratulations to Dr. Marquianna Griffin on her successful dissertation defense. Her diss – “From Bars to Barriers” – explains how people achieve stable mental health, despite the many headwinds after release from prison. She reminds us that agency exists, and it can be powerful
@yelsel13@MikeyVuolo @ewschoon @osusoc Congrats! An absolutely stellar diss defense (so good it got me back on Twitter for a minute). I wish we had recorded it so that others could observe. Best of luck to Lesley at NC State!
Happy to announce I defended my doctoral dissertation on Tuesday. I am grateful for my wonderful committee (@MikeyVuolo@RyanDKing1 @ewschoon and the twitterless Townsand Price-Spratlen) and all my family and friends! @osusoc
Students... Don't forget about midterms (the midterm elections, that is). In the spirit of our motto, "education for citizenship."

Teaching is so weird because nobody seems to want to talk about how to explain things... which seems like it'd be something we'd talk a whole lot about. There are a few things I've learned from research into clarity of explanations that I wish I'd been taught earlier 1/
The benefits of clear writing: articles with concrete language, examples, active voice, and common (vs. technical) words are better cited. Articles +1 SD clearer got 157 more Google Scholar citations than comparable articles with less clear writing #AcWri#AcademicTwitter 😎
Ruth Peterson received the University's Distinguished Service Award last night. True to form, Ruth's speech was gracious, humble, and wise. The President and Provost also shared remarks about her accomplishments.
Congrats Ruth, and thanks for the pic!
