i need people to actually understand what happened here because the numbers by themselves dont do it justice

russell westbrook walked into leuzinger high school in lawndale california at 5'8 and 140 pounds wearing size 14 shoes. he did not start varsity until his junior year. he did not recieve a single college recruiting letter until the summer before his SENIOR year. when ben howland took over at UCLA and called leuzingers coach, he wasnt calling about russ at all. he was calling about russells best friend khelcey barrs III, a 6'6 200 pound forward who already had a DePaul offer at sixteen years old and lived directly across the street from him

the two of them had the whole thing mapped out. UCLA together, then the league together

may 2004. pickup game at LA southwest college. khelcey collapses on the floor and never gets back up. enlarged heart. gone at 16

and here is what a fifteen year old kid decided to do with that. he started walking across the street every single week to do khelceys chores at his grandmothers house. khelcey used to wash his little sister marilyns hair once a week, so russell just quietly started doing that too. marilyn still calls him a big brother to this day. years later when he got his own signature line with jordan brand he made KB3 colorways and worked directly with the barrs family on them so that THEY got to tell khelceys story instead of him telling it for them. he has said flat out that what he wants is for people to know khelcey could have been the best player in the country

that same summer russ grew seven inches. UCLA finally offered. two years after that hes the 4th overall pick in the 2008 draft, taken by the seattle supersonics who packed up and relocated to oklahoma city that same week

and then for eighteen straight years, 1,301 regular season games and 135 more in the playoffs, he took the floor with a KB3 wristband on his shooting wrist. several of his signature shoes had RIP on one tongue and KB3 on the other. every night. through the MVP, through seven different jerseys, through every season people spent dunking on him online, all the way down to a 22 win kings team at 37 years old

he walks away 14th all time in scoring, 5th all time in assists, and with more triple doubles than any human being who has ever picked up a basketball

the kid nobody was recruiting. carrying two people the entire way and never once making it about himself

A couple months ago, ESPN’s Todd McShay claimed Jalen Carter had “character issues” that could affect his stock.

Yesterday, it was revealed that this past season, Carter paid for his teammate Weston Wallace’s meals with his own scholarship money.

Wallace is a walk-on so he doesn’t eat for free like the rest of the team.

Carter heard about this and didn’t want to let that happen, so he contributed his own funds to feed his teammate everyday.
