Big day in the Adams household - it's 'met our annual deductible' day!

Like millions of Americans, our healthcare use shifts dramatically for the rest of the year. Early on, high out-of-pocket costs lead many to delay or skip necessary care and preventive services. Once the deductible is met, incentives flip: there's pressure to squeeze in needed (or wanted) procedures before December 31, while everything feels 'free.'

This is a classic example of how distorted incentives in our system can backfire. Underuse of valuable care at the start of the year, followed by potential overuse later.

Too many people avoid timely treatment due to costs, while others race the calendar. We can (and should) do better. 🤷🏽‍♂️
