Studying the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, we find that:
- Pakistan's military institution serves as a long-term guarantor of policy, ensuring projects continue even when civilian governments change.
- Centralised decision-making in hybrid systems helps overcome the bureaucratic delays and political gridlock often found in nascent democracies.
- The emergence of a new ‘Global Factory’, where Chinese firms are internalising knowledge-intensive activities while externalising labour-intensive ones, creating a "quasi-internalised" market within host countries.
