Forthcoming book; the untold story of Rykodisc, the indie record label that could. David Bowie, Big Star, Elvis Costello, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa and more
Thanks for checking out @Rykobook site & signing on for updates (they will be infrequent & fun!). If you haven't already, c'mon!
PS: site shows prototype for unreleased @davidbowiereal Ziggy 4 CD 25th Anniversary box set
RTs appreciated!
Sorry to hear about Sam Holdsworth's passing. Despite declining an interview for RykoBook, my experiences with him were largely positive and he was supportive during my second stint at Ryko.
While the world is trying to kill me, I got a call that one of my favorite late period @rykodisc records is getting a reissue (on vinyl for the first time!) + bonus tracks, so that's fantastic news.
PS: There'll be CDs, for those of us who prefer the superior format
My fave @morphine_band album. I told Mark farther & louder on this one & left him to interpret that as he wished. He delivered (but great quiet bits too). Honey White should’ve been a hit; perfect post-grunge song, more in @RykoBook https://t.co/7wPxAswVGO
My favorite @morphine_band album. I told Mark to push farther & louder on this one & left him alone to interpret that as he wished. He delivered (although there are great quieter bits as well). Honey White should’ve been a hit; the perfect post-grunge song. Lots more in @RykoBook
Morphine's third studio album, "Yes", was released 29 years ago today. The album features some of the band's most beloved songs and showcases the band's innovative sounds. https://t.co/IIHtFP1NLT
This is an amazing record; I was two songs in and knew it was a classic. New edition soon 👀?
Kelly was my last signing before Chris Blackwell transitioned me to dvd development where his cast of idiots slapped away a ton of great ideas (they later apologized). More in @RykoBook
@rykodisc tried to sign Mojo Nixon in the early ‘00s.
The reason that deal went south at the last minute is hilarious.
It & many more will be in @RykoBook
@dada_drummer No doubt in my mind that Amazon is waiting for the collapse of the streaming market and will buy Spotify merely for the interface and algorithm. For pennies on the dollar.
One @Rykodisc artist talking about how great another label mate was!
The full story of how a classic @JimiHendrix album ended up on a two year old indie label will be in @RykoBook!
Bootsy, baby!
Happy Heavenly Birthday to the best to ever do it. Mr. James Marshall "Jimi" Hendrix; November 27, 1942 – Sept 18, 1970) He is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential electric guitarists in the history of popular music, and one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame describes him as "arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music.
(I approve that Message)🫡R u Experienced?
Bootsy baby!!!🤩
November 25, 1974, 49 years ago today, Nick Drake left the earth. In 1993, I made the pilgrimage to his grave, journalist Gurbir Dhillon (and a photographer) captured it for a Birmingham newspaper.
Back in the early days of iTunes, Rykodisc Prez Don Rose worked with a coalition of indie labels to lobby Apple to pay indies the per track same rate Apple was paying the majors. He succeeded, but doubt that coalition could coalesce today, if only for financial reasons. F Spotify
Pic taken in the basement of the Minneapolis Rykodisc office. Husker Du had been rehearsing in the company’s previous location in St Paul - we were unknowingly responsible for booting them!
...A previously unseen image from this feature, taken at the band's rehearsal space in Minneapolis by noted photographer Moshe Brakha, comprises the cover of the new "Let It Bleed Edition" of "Tim" (available September 22 via Rhino). https://t.co/dpQRXCSFSG ...(2/2)
Spotify’s denial is that this accusation is “largely a work of fiction” - which means it’s partly fact, yeah? They know what’s going on but true to form they are secretive and slippery with information…
Never thought Y Kant Tori Read would ever get reissued, so anything is possible, but hard to imagine this will happen if it hasn’t yet. These two own the rights, if what I’m led to believe is true.
While doing interviews for @RykoBook, I asked @morphine_band's manager why there was no website. They've now had a website (go buy a shirt!) & are hosting a walking tour of Cambridge & a @vaporsMORPHINE gig. Visit Mark Sandman's Hi N Dry loft & more: https://t.co/uvjNg6O3xC
