"Big fish", Tim Burton

Magnesium sulfate
Magnesium threonate
Magnesium malate
Magnesium glycinate
Magnesium citrate
Magnesium oxide
What to use for what? Let's dig in
- Magnesium oxide : cheapest, but only about four percent gets absorbed - so mostly just a laxative. Evidence is solid for constipation, weak for anything else like sleep or cramps.
- Magnesium citrate: way better absorption, hits blood levels fast. Decent data for migraines, muscle cramps, and mild anxiety—studies show it cuts migraine headache days by twenty percent in some trials.
- Magnesium glycinate: super gentle, no gut drama. Best evidence for sleep- small RCTs say it boosts deep sleep and cuts wake-ups. Works better in patients with deficiency. Also helps restless legs, but that’s mostly anecdotal.
- Magnesium malate: energy-focused, supposed to fight fatigue. Evidence? Thin, mostly fibromyalgia patients report less pain, but placebo-controlled trials are tiny or nonexistent.
- Magnesium threonate: crosses blood-brain barrier, so brain fog and memory claims. One decent mouse study, two human pilots—promising for cognition, but we’re still waiting on big trials. Major conflict of interest in trials. Trials sponsered by the company that holds patent. So better quality studies are required.
- Magnesium sulfate: Intravenous only, used in hospitals for eclampsia or asthma. No oral version worth talking about—evidence is rock-solid for emergencies.
Bottom line: Different salts and different uses. Only Magnesium sulphate has high quality evidence for efficacy- only in ecclampsia( a condition associated with hypertension and seizures in pregnancy) and acute severe asthma. Evidence for efficacy of other salts for use in various other conditions are moderate to low quality.
