Welsh probation services recorded 500 people rough sleeping on the day of their release from prison in 2023/24, with an average of five people leaving HMP Cardiff homeless every week that year.
The MoJ statistics show that 24% of recalls involved reoffending. The rest were people who breached their licence conditions for reasons such as failing to stay off alcohol or drugs, missing curfews and failing to attend appointments with Probation Officers.
The long-term high-security estate is becoming more dangerous, mainly because a large proportion of prisoners have indefinite sentences or extremely long tariffs, & there are no resources to meet their needs. Combined with inexperienced staff, creates a recipe for disaster.
No spaces are left in prisons again, so how many are stuck in segregation because of this? The UN considers segregation lasting over 15 days a form of torture, calling it "cruel & "inhuman." Since 2011, the Special Rapporteur on Torture has called for a global ban on segregation.

FREEDOM IS PRICELESS
Utterly shameful. This is not an isolated death but part of a systemic pattern. Time and again women are ending up in prisons which further inflict harm. Women prisons are fundamentally unsafe and need to be closed down and money reinvested in communities. https://t.co/sPE8D7OeWk
Nick: They only go behind bars if it’s a fairly major crime, Janey
Janey: I’m sorry to correct you but the most prevalent offence is shoplifting. Have you looked at the latest stats on what women are in prison for?
Nick: I haven’t, no. I’ve got no idea, no.
@SAMARIUN@LloydSewing The most damaging thing to prisoners and society is a psychologist. It’s not possible to predict the future and govt stats prove this as we have the worst reoffending rates anywhere in the developed world. If govt really wanted to reduce recidivism they would adopt Scandi model
