India is struggling at 7.8% GDP growth.
Absolutely tragic.
We were comfortable growing slower.
Now India has made critics uncomfortable.
Very insensitive.
We once belonged to the elite Fragile Five club.
Prestigious membership.
And now?
India is the world's sixth-largest economy.
Completely unnecessary.
Then came great economics.
The former Finance Secretary found 2.6%.
Old GDP series on one side.
New GDP series on the other.
Mix both generously.
And voila.
India grew at just 2.6%.
Magnificent mathematics.
Somewhere, statistics filed for divorce.
Now look at India's terrible performance.
In 2014, India was the 11th-largest economy.
Nice and harmless.
Nominal GDP was ₹106.6 lakh crore.
Now it is over ₹331 lakh crore.
Three times the headache.
And the latest quarter gets worse.
Manufacturing grew 9.2%.
Services grew 10%.
Investment grew 11.9%.
Exports grew 12%.
Consumption grew 7.1%.
Terrible scenes everywhere.
Clearly a “dead economy.”
Now look at the longer trend.
Real per-capita income rose about 47%.
Why would anyone want that?
Rural real consumption rose about 45%.
Urban real consumption rose about 38%.
Indians are consuming too much development.
Who gave them permission?
Working adults rose from 46.8% to 58.2%.
Unemployment fell from 6% to 3.2%.
Youth unemployment fell from 17.8% to 10.2%.
This is getting embarrassing.
Think about the foreign headlines.
Then poverty committed the ultimate crime.
Multidimensional poverty fell from 24.85% to 14.96%.
About 13.5 crore Indians escaped it.
Completely unacceptable.
India was supposed to remain poor.
Otherwise the narrative stops narrating.
But wait.
India still has problems.
Real wage growth remains weak.
Job quality needs improvement.
Household financial savings weakened.
Youth employment needs attention.
Inequality deserves scrutiny.
Good.
Now we are doing economics again.
Question GDP.
Question the Government.
Question economists.
Question every number.
But question honestly.
Because criticism backed by data is economics.
Criticism without data is opinion.
And pessimism built on bad mathematics?
That is comedy.
Perhaps India's strangest problem today is this.
It is growing faster than some narratives can adjust.
A Supreme Court judge exposed Maharashtra’s schools.
At least, that’s what the headline sold you.
Kumbh became the villain.
Schools became the victim.
Perfect outrage.
Except for one problem.
The full story.
Sitting SC Justice P.B. Varale.
Cited ₹34,000 crore linked to Nashik Kumbh.
Then came the punchline.
Just 0.1%.
Roughly ₹32 crore.
Enough to save ~100 Marathi schools.
Powerful line.
Fantastic headline.
But is it the full truth?
Let’s fact-check it.
Because judges deal in evidence.
And evidence can be inconvenient.
First, the famous ₹34,732 crore.
Sounds enormous.
Except...
It isn’t ₹34,732 crore for tents and pujas.
~85% is permanent infrastructure.
~51% for roads.
~8% for bridges and flyovers.
~9% for institutional buildings.
~15% is temporary.
That’s roughly:
₹29,500 crore in permanent assets.
₹5,200 crore in temporary works.
What survives after Kumbh?
Roads.
Ring roads.
Bridges.
Flyovers.
Water systems.
Sewerage.
Electricity.
Transport.
Parking.
Digital networks.
Security systems.
Ghats and riverfronts.
The Nashik Ring Road also links towards:
Samruddhi Mahamarg.
Vadhvan Port corridor.
Chennai–Surat corridor.
Kumbh is the deadline.
Nashik keeps the infrastructure.
Now the second headline.
“Marathi schools are closing.”
True.
But why?
Maharashtra’s 2026-27 Education Budget?
~₹1.08 lakh crore.
10% higher than 2025-26.
Spending isn't disappearing.
It is rising.
Now Maharashtra's schools:
~1.08 lakh schools.
~2.13 crore students.
~7.48 lakh teachers.
UDISE+ says:
99.8% have drinking water.
99.6% have functional water.
96.6% have girls’ toilets.
94.9% have electricity.
82.5% have computers.
72.1% have internet.
Perfect?
No.
I expect 100%.
But here comes the missing number.
255 Marathi-medium schools closed in two years.
Why?
Parents increasingly prefer English-medium schools.
That changes everything.
The problem isn't simply ₹32 crore.
Demand itself is shifting.
Over roughly four years:
624 Marathi-medium schools closed.
Sounds terrible.
But during roughly the same period:
426 English-medium schools were added.
Schools aren't simply disappearing.
Parents are choosing differently.
And low-enrolment schools still need teachers.
Infrastructure.
Recurring expenditure.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra already has thousands of single-teacher schools.
So what makes sense?
Keep every emptying school alive?
Or move resources where children are?
That is the real debate.
Not:
Kumbh versus children.
And yes.
Maharashtra deserves criticism.
Fix single-teacher schools.
Fix accessibility.
Fix connectivity.
Fix unsafe buildings.
Take every metric to 100%.
Ask brutal questions.
Demand brutal answers.
But use the complete dataset.
Democracy isn't about finding a villain every morning.
It is about finding the truth.
Question the government.
Question the opposition.
Question the media.
And yes.
Question a judge too.
Bikini blouse. Smaller Rakhi. Brother. Dog.
Ritual complete.
Next year?
Transparent blouse.
Tiny Rakhi.
No brother.
Only dog.
And somehow, we’ll still be told:
“Relax. My Body, My Underwear.
My Rakhi. My brother. My dog.”
Thank you, Modi Ji.
Women are finally empowered.
Now brothers need protection.
Not sisters.
One humble request though,
Please don’t empower the brothers to arrive in underwear.
Now you’ll ask:
Why bring Modi Ji into this?
Well...
That’s the fashion of our age.
Whatever happens, Modi did it.
GIVA’s undergarment ad,
oops, Rakhi ad went live on 17 August.
People erupted.
GIVA apologised.
The ad disappeared.
Cute.
But wait.
Do you really think GIVA spent lakhs,
Scripting, Shooting, Styling, Editing, Approving,
just to panic and delete it?
Really?
Stop thinking like an offended customer.
Start thinking like a marketer.
A sinister one.
Now understand GIVA’s customer.
It may not be you or me.
Think Bandra.
Think South Mumbai.
Think Bengaluru brunch.
Not necessarily billionaire rich.
More like:
Instagram-hungry.
Rooftop-party types.
“My body, my choice” types.
“Indian culture is patriarchy” types.
That is the market.
A customer who doesn’t ask:
“Is this how Rakhi was celebrated?”
She may ask:
“Does this look good on my reel?”
And that distinction matters.
Because outrage only hurts when the outraged person was going to buy from you.
Otherwise?
He is not a lost customer.
He is free publicity.
Imagine the cynical marketer:
“Make it provocative.
Let Bharat get angry.
They’ll advertise GIVA for free.”
Outrage explodes.
Google wakes up.
GIVA withdraws the ad with a standard corporate-style apology.
While Instagram-hungry customers
discover the brand.
You and I?
We keep defending our traditions.
While GIVA quietly cashes in on our rage.
But there is something GIVA may never understand.
Bharat is not a market.
It is a civilisation.
Raksha Bandhan is not an Instagram Reel.
It is not patriarchy.
It is not a neckline.
And it certainly isn't a marketing prop.
It is a centuries-old tradition.
A sacred thread.
A prayer.
A promise.
A bond between siblings.
Not necessarily born from the same mother.
Not necessarily sharing the same blood.
Because Rakhi was never just about blood.
It was about Raksha.
Protection.
Responsibility.
Trust.
A promise that says:
“I stand with you.
And you stand with me.
No matter what.”
Not for one campaign.
Not until the algorithm moves on.
But beyond money.
Beyond brands.
Beyond outrage.
Beyond even our lifetime.
Companies will come.
Campaigns will disappear.
Trends will change.
Algorithms will forget.
But civilisations survive because some people refuse to forget what their symbols mean.
You must have seen her by now.
That little girl from Arunachal.
The video is everywhere.
Tiny face.
Tiny voice.
But a question big enough to embarrass an entire nation.
“Don’t call me Chinese.”
“I am Indian.”
Read that again.
A child.
Barely four.
Standing inside India.
Explaining to Indians… that she is Indian.
What an achievement.
Nearly eight decades of nation-building.
And a child at our eastern frontier still needs to prove her nationality.
Her name is Karga Tinkle Gongo.
She is from Itanagar.
The Northeast often enters our national conversation only when there is...
Insurgency.
Border trouble.
Floods.
Violence.
Or elections.
And today… a four-year-old answered all of us.
So, Beta Tinkle… listen carefully.
You never have to prove that you are Indian.
Not to China.
Not to Delhi.
Not to anyone.
You are Indian.
As Indian as I am.
As Indian as anyone reading this.
Your Arunachal is our Arunachal.
Your mountains are our mountains.
Your flag is our flag.
Your motherland is our motherland.
Your Bharat is our Bharat.
And yes… we love you.
Because look at us.
Adults.
Educated.
Political.
Sophisticated.
And permanently fighting.
Tamil Nadu hates Hindi.
Karnataka debates Hindi.
Maharashtra screams Marathi.
North fights South.
States fight over language.
Communities fight over religion.
Castes fight over reservation.
People fight over surnames.
Regions.
Ideologies.
Even gods.
Everyone desperately proving how different they are.
And somewhere in Itanagar...
a four-year-old is desperately proving something far simpler:
“I AM INDIAN.”
Maybe that is the tragedy.
Children understand belonging.
Adults manufacture divisions.
If 1.4 billion Indians understood what this little girl understands...
half our politicians would become jobless overnight.
Maybe Tinkle doesn't need a lesson in nationalism.
Maybe… we do.

Everyone saw the Congress HQ video.
Sonia Gandhi gesturing angrily.
Mallikarjun Kharge visibly reacting.
Rahul Gandhi, as always looks confused.
And all of it while the full Vande Mataram continued.
Now ask the uncomfortable question.
This was not a BJP organised function.
This was Congress headquarters.
Do we seriously believe the singers accidentally chose the full rendition?
With the entire top leadership standing metres away.
That explanation is difficult to swallow.
Sonia Gandhi and Kharge are not political amateurs.
They understand cameras.
They understand gestures.
They understand symbolism.
Was that discomfort spontaneous?
Not at all.
It was a well planned drama.
Congress was trying to appease it's vote bank.
1937.
Muslim League objected to the full Vande Mataram.
Muhammad Ali Jinnah was among the prominent voices.
The later verses invoked Hindu goddess imagery.
Congress chose the first two stanzas.
A compromise was born.
To suit the political narrative.
To grab the throne of politics.
2026.
Congress was sending the same message.
It has chosen its side.
Identity became political arithmetic.
The community became a constituency.
Difference became division.
And division eventually became destiny.
The voter now stands between two hardened poles.
And the time has come to choose.
Choose carefully.
Because this is bigger than one viral video.
His mother's job was to move her arm back and forth 9,000 times to make the thread for one saree. It took her about 6 hours. She did it every day for years, and her shoulders and elbows hurt so much that at night all she could do was rub balm on them and lie down.
Her son watched this happen from the time he was a child.
He dropped out of school in class 6, had no training in machines, and decided he was going to build one anyway.
His name is Chintakindi Mallesham.
He was born in the early 1970s in Sharjipet, a small village in what is now Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district in Telangana. His parents were handloom weavers. They wove Pochampally ikat sarees, and the money from it just about fed the family.
The part his mother did is called asu. It is the winding of silk yarn around pegs, and it decides the entire pattern of the saree. Nothing else in the process can begin until it is done. It cannot be skipped and it cannot be rushed.
For 2 sarees a day, his mother moved her arm around 18,000 times and handled roughly 25 km of thread.
He left school to help the family earn. Later he went back and passed class 10 after several attempts. He had no knowledge of mechanics or electronics.
He started building. He fixed parts onto a wooden frame, piece by piece. Most of it failed. Every failure wasted material and money the family did not have. There was a point when his own mother asked him to stop.
He went to Hyderabad and worked in a workshop, and spent his time watching how the machines there moved. Something in one of those movements gave him the answer. He came home and finished it.
The machine does the asu automatically. What took 6 hours now takes about 90 minutes. A weaver who could manage 2 sarees a day can now do 6 to 8.
He named it the Laxmi Asu Machine, after his mother.
Thousands of weaving families use it today. He got the Padma Shri in 2017, in the science and engineering category, without a single day of engineering education.
He has said the award mattered, but nothing matched the look on his parents' faces.
He is still working. He wants to fix the other painful parts of weaving too, so that the next generation does not leave the loom.
A boy with no schooling built a machine because he could not watch his mother rub balm on her arms one more night.
