Mafourteen Walling
These terraced walls were constructed by illegal immigrants from neighbouring Mozambique, commonly referred to as “Mafourteen”, who were caught passing through the Kruger National Park to look for jobs. Those caught traversing through Kruger National Park were forced to build the Punda Maria stone wall terraces.
The immigrants were freed after fourteen days of constructing these terraces to buy their freedom. The construction of these terraces was aimed to promote sustainable land management practices. Such structures testify to the methods and practices used by indigenous Mozambicans from prehistory to organise their living and working space by optimising local natural and human resources.

Mapungubwe: The Beginning opens in two days.
Long before South Africa’s borders were drawn, an ancient kingdom flourished on the banks of the Limpopo River, trading gold and ivory with China, Arabia and India.
From 23 to 25 October, Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage Site hosts the 2026 Mapungubwe Lecture Series, our annual gathering where scholars, artists and communities come together to explore that story.
This year’s programme includes lectures, a heritage tour of Mapungubwe Hill, cultural performances and an exhibition of new work by artists who spent a week in residency at the park.

Madzaringwe
Kruger National Park’s story stretches far beyond a century, and Madzaringwe is proof of that.
Located in the park’s northern region near the Nyalaland Trail area, just south of the Luvuvhu River, this fossil site was discovered in 1995 and holds the distinction of being the first vertebrate fossil site ever found within Kruger. The site contains fossilised remains of Euskelosaurus, a large herbivorous dinosaur measuring approximately 9.3 metres in length and 4.4 metres in height, believed to have lived around 210 million years ago in small family groups.
Fossilised remains of two different dinosaur types have been identified, and petrified wood has been recorded at two nearby locations, further underscoring the site’s exceptional palaeontological significance.
