Mountaineers We’ve Lost in 2025: Farewell to Laura Dahlmeier, Whose Freedom Was Found on the High Faces of the Earth

Laura Dahlmeier, a celebrated German mountain athlete and former biathlon champion, passed away on 28 July, 2025 on Laila Peak in the Hushe Valley, Pakistan. Not on the summit, but on the steep and technical face at 5700 meters, where a sudden rockfall left no chance of survival, sending shock and sorrow through the global climbing and outdoor community.

From the ski tracks of Garmisch-Partenkirchen to the alpine walls and Himalayan giants, she built a life defined by speed, precision, purpose, and a deep love for wild places. An Olympic double gold medallist, a seven-time World Champion, and the record-holder for the fastest female ascent of Ama Dablam in 2024, Laura carried her athletic brilliance into every mountain she touched.

With her passing, the mountain world loses a rare spirit—light, fast, humble, and fiercely true to herself. Her legacy lives in the girls she inspired, the stories she told for nature, and the trails she blazed far beyond medals, summits, or records.
