🚨🇮🇳 INDIA’S INDIGENOUS MISSILE-SEEKER COOLING BREAKTHROUGH

A relatively small Indian defence technology company is working on a critical component for advanced infrared missile seekers.

🇮🇳 #Techno Defence Pvt Ltd, based in Mumbai with its R&D centre in Thane, has developed an indigenous Joule-Thomson (JT) Cooler with support from DRDO under the Technology Development Fund (TDF).

🔬 What does the JT Cooler do?

Infrared seekers detect the heat signatures of targets such as aircraft and vehicles. But infrared detectors generate their own thermal and electronic noise, which can make it harder to identify weak target signatures.

The JT Cooler rapidly brings the detector down to extremely low temperatures, reducing noise and improving the detector’s ability to distinguish the target’s infrared signal.

⚙️ Key capabilities reported for the indigenous system:

• 🌡️ Cooling to around −175°C
• ⚡ Reaches the required operating temperature in less than 10 seconds
• 🪶 Extremely compact and lightweight — reported at around 15 grams
• 🔄 Dual-flow self-regulation technology
• 💨 Once the required temperature is achieved, gas flow can reportedly fall to around 5–10% of the initial flow
• 🎯 Intended for high-performance cooled infrared detectors used in missile applications

🛡️ DRDO + Indian Industry

#DRDO records identify the project as “Development of Dual Flow Self Regulation JT Cooler”, awarded under the TDF programme to Technocraft Industries India Ltd., Mumbai, with work associated with DRDO’s Solid State Physics Laboratory (SSPL) and Research Centre Imarat (RCI).

Techno Defence was established in 2016 and focuses on indigenous defence technologies and advanced seeker systems. The company says it is a joint venture involving Technocraft Industries India Ltd. and Dr Pravin Salinkar.

🇮🇳 Why is this strategically important?

The JT cooler may be tiny, but it sits inside a highly sophisticated chain of technologies that enables a cooled IR seeker to function effectively.

Developing this capability domestically can help India:

🔹 Reduce dependence on imported cryogenic cooling components
🔹 Strengthen indigenous infrared seeker technology
🔹 Support development of advanced IR-guided weapons
🔹 Build domestic expertise in precision micro-scale manufacturing
🔹 Improve the reliability and supply security of critical missile components
🔹 Push advanced defence technologies from DRDO laboratories into Indian industry

#India has already developed capabilities in infrared detector arrays, detector-dewar-cooler assemblies and infrared focal-plane technologies. An indigenous JT cooler adds another important piece to this ecosystem.

भारतीय नौसेना अब दुश्मन के युद्धपोतों और जमीन पर मौजूद ठिकानों पर दूर से ही सटीक हमला कर सकेगी. सूत्रों के मुताबिक रक्षा मंत्रालय ने इसके लिए मीडियम रेंज लॉइटरिंग म्यूनिशन- LM-MR की खरीद का प्रोसेस शुरू कर दिया है. इसको लेकर Request रिक्वेस्ट फॉर इनफॉर्मेशन यानी RFI जारी की गई है. ये एक तरह का आत्मघाती ड्रोन होगा, जो युद्धपोत से उड़ान भरेगा. हवा में देर तक मंडराएगा और टारगेट मिलते ही उस पर हमला कर देगा. इससे युद्धपोतों की मारक क्षमता कई गुना बढ़ जाएगी.
