Had a great time this weekend visiting some interesting sites on the Somme battlefields. A different experience going back to Thiepval with @J_the_biscuit and it not being our work place. Will probably be my last visit for a couple years now next up Canada 🇨🇦
Cannot recommend this enough, a truly life changing experience. If you’re an individual who’s interested in history, the First World War and becoming an ambassador for the @CWGC in the face of the public, this is for you!
Great Experience today having a tour around the Wellington, Blenheim and Nelson quarries. A real eye opener into the history of the New Zealand tunnelling coy. Also felt back in my natural habitat being underground #WW1 @J_the_biscuit @briscoe765
A new one for me with @conorwillixms when we visited Caterpillar Valley Cemetery. This headstone is to recognise that the unknown soldier who laid here is now in the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior in New Zealand #ww1#somme#newzealand
Great day the other day guiding my dad @SAW_AX around the battlefields, a few sites I haven’t been too before including Gordon dump Cemetery, and a visit to Captain Charlie Mays grave, paying our respects after reading his letter #WW1
@AllisterMeal @DanHillHistory @conorwillixms When they are informed of them, generally yes. But ones found in the woods will often stay there for some time. They estimate another 100 years of finding munitions on the battlefields of WW1.
106 years after the battle of the Somme munitions continue to be found. Two examples here while touring with @conorwillixms from Redan Ridge and Mametz Wood. #somme#WW1#mametz
With @conorwillixms We visited a few off the track locations on our two days. Here we are at Ayette cemetery for Indian and Chinese. Look at the pagoda style giving a very Asian feel #somme#WW1#CWGC
Day 2. We took in a little French, German and a lot of British cemeteries. Some perfect points where the sectors of battlefield could be clearly understood. My boy @conorwillixms did good and left a tear in my eye. Thanks for two great days son. #somme#WW1
