Why 00:00 hrs, 15 August 1947?

Mountbatten fixed the date. It was the 2nd anniversary of Japan's surrender, and it suited him.

Astrologically it was Shravana Krishna Chaturdashi. A rikta tithi collapsing into Amavasya by evening, with Bhadra sitting over the entire working day. There was no muhurta in those 24 hours. Not one.

Pandit Suryanarain Vyas of Ujjain and Pandit Hardeo Sharma Trivedi were permitted to choose the hour, not the day. So they used the only door left open: the Hindu day turns at sunrise, not at midnight.

Which means the hours before dawn on 15 August still belonged to 14 August. And that day carried Krishna Trayodashi, Moon in Pushya, Siddhi yoga, Vanija karana.

They then needed Vrishabha lagna, a sthira rashi, because you do not found a nation on a movable sign. Vrishabha rose from 23:33 to 01:28.

Midnight is also nishita, the night's hinge, the counterpart of abhijit, where the defects of a day are held to be cancelled.

And Krishna Chaturdashi began at 00:00:34.

Thirty four seconds.

That was the entire overlap that was legally 15 August and astrologically still 14 August. They took it at the stroke.
