People in DC! Come see @MarkLeibovich and me tonight at the Barnes and Noble in Georgetown for a discussion on Silicon Valley, fraud, and my book HOW TO RULE THE WORLD!
Would love to see you all there.
Somehow, in @rosehorowitch's fantastic (and depressing) Atlantic cover story (!) on our postliterate age, I find this stat to be the most gutting: "In the study of 236,000 American adults, only 2 percent read to a child on a given day." https://t.co/2ulVeQ58BP
Incredible deep-dive by my friend @huibmodderkolk and company into how Dutch intelligence (AIVD and MIVD) missed the full-scale invasion and was adamant it wouldn't happen, based on assumptions about Putin and a well-placed asset in Russia. "Only a tiny circle of confidants — perhaps ten people at most — knew about Putin’s war plans. It explains the mismatch with the Americans. The US intelligence agencies evidently had access to someone or something inside that innermost circle." https://t.co/h8yp1iDqmH
Almost every morning, I wake up to news that Ukraine has struck Russian oil refineries and weapons factories, and Russia has deliberately murdered civilians. There is no moral equivalence in this war at all. Those who contend otherwise are either ignorant or malign.
The Trump Justice Department sent letters to at least 10 states threatening criminal prosecution of top election officials if ballots cast by noncitizens were counted in upcoming elections. https://t.co/6atts1zzNP
The way of war is changing, as shown by conflicts in Ukraine and Iran. Are the hundreds of billions of dollars being invested today in new tanks, planes and warships going to become the equivalent of buying horses and arrows on the eve of machine guns and howitzers? My deep dive. https://t.co/PcOhx5SM8M
RED FLAG: Trump's Justice Department has informed Michigan officials it intends to send election monitors to three cities in the state for the Aug. 4 primary. https://t.co/ROg2dU2rIr
Exclusive: US military commanders bypassed warnings that intel on potential targets in Iran was severely out of date & approved some strikes — including one that hit a school, killing nearly 200 hundred children & adults -- based on years-old info that was not updated before war started, per multiple sources.
"Omsk oil refinery, Russia's largest, has halted operations following a Ukrainian drone attack, two industry sources said on Tuesday...
According to the sources, a crude distillation unit, CDU-10, which accounts for around 38% of the plant's production capability with a capacity of 24,580 metric tons a day, caught fire and was damaged in the attack.
Omsk refinery has stopped selling gasoline and diesel on the Saint Petersburg International Mercantile Exchange since Tuesday, according to data from the exchange.
The sources said another primary processing unit, CDU-11, was also halted. It accounts for 37% of the plant's capacity and is able to process 24,000 tons of oil per day."

Britain’s MI6 told Keir Starmer that Trump’s second White House, “is ‘The Crucible’ meets ‘Wolf Hall,’” referencing two fictional works about the Salem Witch Trials and the court of England’s ill-tempered Henry VIII. @JoeWSJ@drewhinshaw@DanMichaelsWSJ https://t.co/3jMlU6qj6b
A cautionary tale here for all the Dems who turned to character assassination to discredit one of multiple women - this is what that tactic got you:
“Racicot said she later felt compelled to go public about her experience because the reaction to the Times story was dominated by controversy about another woman, Lyndsey Fifield, who alleged Platner mistreated her and faced attacks because of her ties to the Republican Party”
Trump: Windsor Castle. It’s the longest building I’ve ever seen.
But I said to Charles, “Who built this? This place is incredible.”
William the Conqueror. I said, “Oh, William the Conqueror—was he a nice man?”
Charles said, “No, no, he was extremely strong and very tough.”
I said, “I figured with a name like William the Conqueror, I would think… what do you think? I think you’d be tough.”
I said we have to come up with a good name for you, maybe Charles the Conqueror.
Here’s the relevant portion of Maine ballot vacancy law: Platner would have to drop out by July 13 (one week from today) and then the state party would have until July 27 (2 weeks) to pick a replacement. https://t.co/vrhheiaLQZ
NYT: Several hundred people have refused to leave the National Mall despite an order to evacuate because of severe inclement weather that is approaching.
Some are even arguing with Secret Service agents. At one point, a crowd of people began running back toward the stage. An officer is sternly repeating the order over a bullhorn and the crowd is booing.
Many have begun chanting “U.S.A., U.S.A.” A federal law enforcement officer is trying to assure people that the event has not been canceled.
One man walking by blamed the situation on “liberals in the weather service,” adding, “I think this is baloney.”
President Trump says his speech on the 4th of July will be “really long” despite the heat.
“And by the way on July 4th its going to be approximately 107 degrees out and I’m going to go and I’m going to make a really long speech just to show that I can do anything.”
