A 23-year-old Texas father sent his children to feed the chickens on the family ranch.

His son came running back. His sister had been grabbed and carried into a shed.

The father ran inside, pulled a 47-year-old ranch hand off his 5-year-old daughter, and beat the man with his bare hands. He called 911 immediately, asking for help, saying he did not know what to do. The man died from his injuries.

A grand jury declined to charge the father. Texas law allows deadly force during a sexual assault.

To one side, this is exactly how the law should work — a parent protecting a child in the moment. To the other, deadly private justice always carries risk, even when the moral case feels obvious.
