Tim Wakefield might best be known for serving up the walk off to Aaron Boone.
But in realityโฆ
Tim Wakefield was the HERO of that ALCS run against New York.
14 innings.
Three runs allowed.
1.97 ERA
Credited with two wins.
It was the last bitter chapter of the curse.
One year later, Terry Francona handed him the ball, and sent him to the mound in game one of the 2004 World Series.
In baseball years, he pitched to be a very old man.
In 2011, his age 45 season, he shared the pitcherโs mound with Clay Buchholz and Jon Lester.
Both young pitchers were only 27 years old at the time. And only ten years old when Wakefield first joined the Red Sox.
In life, tragically, he passed extremely young.
This whole situation is an impossible one to process.
RIP Wake.
Your impact and legacy will long outlive you. And quite frankly, all of us.
Our hearts are broken with the loss of Tim Wakefield.
Wake embodied true goodness; a devoted husband, father, and teammate, beloved broadcaster, and the ultimate community leader. He gave so much to the game and all of Red Sox Nation.
Our deepest love and thoughts are with Stacy, Trevor, Brianna, and the Wakefield family.
