โSo, how has the weather in Jackson been treating you?โ
โReally? The weather? Thatโs the best you could come up with Abs?โ She never felt so awkward in her life.
Abby led them to the town bar. It had gotten pretty late, so there werenโt many people there. Just how Abby liked it. They each grabbed a seat at the end of the bar.
She didnโt want to pry into this manโs life, especially since she just met him, at gunpoint no less.
โฆ
But he seemed to offer some of his own struggles up without even being asked about it. She couldnโt help but feel for Kenny and the immense loss he has faced.
Abby ordered two whiskeys. She wasnโt great at small talk. She didnโt think Kenny would be either.
โฆ
Abby smiled at Kenny, maybe Jackson wouldnโt be so bad after all. Hopefully he will stick around just a little longer.
โYou ever been to the Tipsy Bison? Theyโve got whiskey.โ She said with a smirk. The blonde has taken a real liking to brown liquor.
Abby was never a big drinker, choosing to focus more on her physique and training. But things in Jackson have been slow for her. Given her too much time in her own head.
And so she drinks to drown it out sometimes.
โWell hopefully it takes you a bit longer to move on this time.โ
Abby just met this guy, but she didnโt have many people to talk to around here, and she didnโt mind Kenny.
โHey, would you want to maybe get a drink?โ
โฆ
โKeep breathing I guess. Push forward once Iโve had time to get back on my feet properly.โ
At least he had a few days to figure out what the hell the next move was from here.
Abby nodded in agreement. โSo, if you donโt mind me asking, whatโs your plan? Stick around Jackson for a bit and thenโฆ?โ
She was curious about this new stranger. Itโs not often people make conversation with Abby.
Instead, he just gave a quiet nod of understanding before adding.
โHold onto that purposeโฆ you keep that purpose alive.โ
Might have been too late for him, butโฆ she was still young.
โI never thought it would get any easier until I found a purpose again, in my people. I would do anything to protect them.โ
Coming to Jackson was a huge sacrifice, but one that she hoped would keep them both safe in the end.
โYou couldnโt be more right, Kenny.โ
Abby knew what could happen to those you grew close to in todayโs world. Whatever this guy has been through, it sounds like heโs lost his share of loved ones too.
โIโve lost people too.โ
โฆ
Tight onto what you have.โ
She probably didnโt need to be told this, but he couldnโt help but pass on the little bits of wisdom he still had left to give.
โI think she knows that. When sheโs ready, she will have you back. Like I said, Iโll talk to her.โ
โWhether I like it or not, Ellie needs you. Just as bad as she needs me.โ
Abby finished her second drink. Feeling like sheโs overstayed her welcome, she goes to get up.
โฆ
โ ... โ
The museum , yeah he - remembered bits and pieces about that , she climbed a dinosaur that day โ a little smile as he rubs Fox's belly , โI uh ... I don't expect her to forgive me , but - if she does - she will be welcomed back with open arms. โ
โEllie told me about the time you took her to the museum. You know itโs a really happy memory for her. Sheโs gonna come around. If she can forgive meโฆI think she can forgive you too.โ
Completely disarmed by Foxโs attention, Abby just stared back at him, making a funny face.
โHe really is beautiful Joel.โ
She took a swig from her second drink, starting to feel the effects of the fiery brown liquor.
โฆ
โ ... Water off a ducks back , โ he's waving his hand a little , not accepting the apology but willing to forgive it for now , โWell , hey lil man , you awake now huh ? โ
Fox was leaning back against Joel , watching Abby with curious eyes.
