Meet Titus Okere — the first Nigerian to sign a professional contract with a European club. 🇳🇬

Before Nigerian football stars conquered Europe, there was Titus Okere.

Titus Okere was a pioneering Nigerian footballer who made history when he joined Swindon Town FC in England in January 1953, at the age of 23.

Born in Owerri, Okere hailed from Ngor Okpala in present-day Imo State. He started playing football in 1938 with Zik’s Athletic Club Bombers. He later played for Lagos Railways, where he became team captain.

On October 8, 1949, during a match against Sierra Leone in Freetown, Okere scored Nigeria’s first official international goal. His shot deflected off Sierra Leonean captain Ashman and went into the net as Nigeria won 2–0 in front of 15,000 fans.

At just 20, Okere was one of 18 pioneers who made up Nigeria’s first national football team. They toured the United Kingdom in 1949, playing nine matches.

Remarkably, the Nigerian players played barefoot during the historic tour.

The team was known as the UK Tourists and was later called the Red Devils.

A dazzling left winger, Okere later captained Nigeria against the Gold Coast, now Ghana.

His move to Swindon Town opened a new chapter in Nigerian football history. Although he did not make a senior first-team appearance for Swindon Town, Okere featured for the club’s reserve team, where he scored two goals in two matches.

He faced the challenge of adapting to the cold English weather and playing in heavy football boots, having been accustomed to playing barefoot in Nigeria and during the 1949 UK tour.

He later had a trial with Trowbridge Town before joining Chippenham United.

Titus Okere was the last surviving member of Nigeria’s pioneering 1949 national team.

He died on June 14, 2023, at the age of 94.
