The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has formally warned Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary over public comments he made regarding the July 10 Malta Air Boeing 737 accident after takeoff from Thessaloniki, Greece.
According to the NTSB, O'Leary stated during a July 20 earnings call that an initial investigation finding suggested the accident was caused by foreign object damage, and was not related to the aircraft's age or servicing conditions.
The NTSB says those comments violated the confidentiality requirements of ICAO Annex 13.
As the lead investigative authority, the NTSB has reminded Ryanair that accredited representatives and their technical advisers must not disclose information about the investigation's progress, potential findings or possible causes without the NTSB's express consent.
The NTSB also stressed that it has not yet determined the cause of the accident and that investigators have not ruled out aircraft age or servicing issues as contributing factors.
The agency has urged O'Leary to refrain from making further public statements about the ongoing investigation.
