Their purpose was to provide cost effective accompaniment to silent films as well as intermission entertainment. They were equipped to produce hauntingly similar sounds to that of an orchestra, as well as many novelty sound effects to compliment the action on-screen.

After being damaged by flooding from the river Clyde, it had to be removed from Clydebank Town Hall. A great deal of work was carried out to repair the damage and 10 years later in 2008, the organ moved to it’s new home in Pollokshaws Burgh Hall.

Not many people know about it and yet, once you’ve been to see and hear this mighty organ, you’ll want to return time and time again. You’re transported back to a bygone era. A time when these organs were featured in the major picture houses in the 20’s and 30’s.

The Wurlitzer at Pollokshaws Burgh Hall was originally installed in the Ritz cinema, Stockport, as a three manual, eight rank instrument.
In September 1998, The Scottish Cinema Organ Trust had it transferred and installed at Clydebank Town Hall where it was given a Civic Opening.
