Afrika Bambaataa, born Lance Taylor, has died at 68 due to complications from cancer. A foundational figure in hip-hop, Bambaataa helped shape the culture in the South Bronx during the 1970s, pioneering breakbeat DJing alongside figures like DJ Kool Herc and founding the Universal Zulu Nation.
His influence reached the mainstream with “Planet Rock,” a genre-defining track that fused hip-hop with electronic music and helped expand the culture globally. Beyond music, his vision emphasized peace, unity and community, leaving a lasting imprint on generations of artists and fans.
In later years, his legacy became more complex due to multiple sexual abuse allegations, which led to his resignation from the Zulu Nation in 2016. His impact on hip-hop’s foundation remains significant, while conversations around his legacy continue within the culture.
