Whenever you feel lonely, remember that microscopic Demodex mites permanently live on your face. They mate near hair follicles, lay their eggs inside them, and emerge at night to feed on dead skin cells before returning to their hidden homes.
Demodex mites have likely existed alongside humans for millions of years, evolving with us as one of our oldest microscopic companions. They were first described in 1841 by German dermatologist Gustav Simon, who discovered them living in human hair follicles.
Two species commonly inhabit human skin: Demodex folliculorum, which mainly lives inside hair follicles, and Demodex brevis, which resides deeper in oil glands. Nearly every adult carries these tiny mites, usually without noticing any effects.
They spend most of their lives within the skin, becoming most active at night when they emerge to feed on dead skin cells and natural skin oils. In rare cases, when their populations grow unusually large due to changes in the immune system or skin environment, they can contribute to demodicosis, an inflammatory condition that may cause redness, itching, and acne-like bumps.
