An apology without more concrete steps and/or changes is not enough. And yet another committee with only advisory power is not the change @SAAorg needs or that members are asking for. 1. Apologize to the women@directly. 2. Adopt @AmericanAnthro policy of removing known harassers
Please consider signing this open letter to @SAAorg the Society for American Archaeology in response to their inaction against serial sexual predator David Yesner #SAA2019 https://t.co/BmXAG5fZCU
This thread is what every North Atlantic #anthropology dept needs to delve into all day everyday.
“Why are we still training our students as if they are Malinowski?” — esp. when Malnowski himself is the very colonial enterprise.

Ordinary troll: #MeToo is making boys terrified of dating.
Academic troll: “we risk becoming sucked in a quicksand that will culminate in the annihilation of desire “ 😂 #MaaSadqay#hautalk
The MeTooAnthro team are collectively shocked and disturbed by the arguments put forward in the HAU ‘Short Cuts’ section of Volume 8, Issue 3, which add little to our scholarly understanding of #MeToo, or to a feminist praxis #HauTalk
As an archaeologist who is now 4.5 years sober, this article is very poignant. The words “you’re not a real archaeologist if you don’t drink” have been said to me too many times to count.
Alcoholism shouldn’t be a cornerstone of academia.

Offenders outside of the Southeast? We've backed away from such a list due to legal counsel, such a resource may have to be independent of SEAC. Consider asking @SAAorg and others to do more to #stopharassment They are thinking though the same issues!
Communicating with other #archaeology orgs? Share sanctions? As written, no, but good suggestion we would like to pursue, we will look into legal issues.
When keeping records, can they be used to show patterns against 1 person for example? We hope so! Would be part of ethics committee's charge. Good to have database from start, ala RPA.
Burden of proof? Beyond a reasonable doubt, for example? No standards of evidence as of yet. We would like to encourage reporting and will spell this out with legal counsel.
What happens to evidence after decision is made? As written, strictest confidentiality enforced until conclusion, at which gag is lifted. Complaint to SEAC cannot be anonymous. May offer non-public option but we do want to hold people accountable.
SEACs ability to be aware of what non-members do? Can we ban attendance and publication for non-members? As written now, no, and legal liabilities exist but we hope to tap into such information and make use of it, if possible.
False accusations? Statistically rare. But yes, evidence will be presented and such accusations will ideally be ferreted out. Appeals possible with new evidence as well.
