No te quedes fuera...
A qué esperas?
TIC Scanning Techniques:
Do you know that the refresh rate of your TIC could cause you to miss a victim?
There are many high quality thermal imaging fire service devices currently available for firefighters today. However, an often neglected area of discussion is the “refresh rate” or frame rate of the detector.
When a TIC delays information to the firefighter, critical information is missed!
Imagine how big of an area can be missed by a firefighter conducting a search, with a 3 second delay on the screen.
In a small room, that area may be only a few feet. In a large, open area, the amount of searchable area missed could be costly.
Fire Service TICs that have less than 25 hertz refresh rate or those that claim faster refresh rates but suffer from delays when switching between gains can cause firefighter to:
* Miss the fire room
* Miss the victim
* Miss their crew or their egress point when they are lost or disoriented.
Per NIST Technical Note 1499 (which was the basis for NFPA 1801):
“The display refresh rate is important in applications in which the camera operator may be moving and/or constantly scanning the scene.”
It’s important to clarify that specifications on paper don’t always equate to higher performance inside the fire environment. Fire service TICs vary in refresh rate from:
* 9 hertz
* 16 hertz
* 25 hertz
* 30 hertz
* 60 hertz
The frame rate or refresh rate is not the sole determining factor in the speed of image processing. Many devices that have higher refresh rates actually have a delay when switching from high to low sensitivity. For example, a firefighter who scans a room and views from a cold area to a hot area can experience any of the following changes with a TIC:
* Image or Screen Freeze
* A brief flash of white before the TIC switches to low sensitivity.
A firefighter needs to know this BEFORE they go to their next fire!

Do you train your firefighters on how to properly scan with a TIC?
In the last two years, we have reviewed 9 MAY-DAYs and near miss incidents that all involved improper scanning techniques which were due to:
* Failure to wipe lens.
* Standing up.
* Scanning high instead of scanning low to high.
* Misinterpretation by reading the spot temperature or failure to identify convection currents.
* Failure to identify hazards.

Big News!
Lives will be saved, and more Firefighters will go home safe as a result of this course.
Kentucky Thermal Institute’s partnership with Western Kentucky University, featuring Andy Starnes as the educator, has hit a milestone that is a surreal moment for me.
To gain approval from the Kentucky Fire Commission for CEU credits was very exciting.
The only thing more exciting is that over 5,000 KY individuals related directly to firefighting will be receiving an email directly from WKU to introduce the online course.
