Police officers and arrested suspects were forced to make a getaway after coming under attack from a heavily armed gang in Cato Manor tonight.
Earlier this evening, three police officers stopped and searched a grey Toyota Etios.
Two men were found with an AK-47 and placed under arrest.
While seated in the police car, they warned the officers to move faster because their accomplices were en route.
Within seconds, a bakkie and another car arrived.
The occupants opened fire on the police vehicle, striking and wounding the two suspects.
Police were able to shake off the attackers and drive to the Cato Manor SAPS.
All officers narrowly escaped injury.
The Etios was also recovered after the shooting.
Preliminary information indicates the arrested suspects are part of a notorious CIT gang and were in the process of carrying out a robbery today.
A search for the gunmen is underway.
