@DPearsonPHL We on the professional class have made it hard for all kids to learn because we want to guarantee the best education for our kids and not deal with the implications of not guaranteing it for all. The world can't only be for the "smart" kids.

@DPearsonPHL If we want a more egalitarian world it means providing quality for all not just the ones you think deserve it. That is hard. It still means assessing kids and holding them accountable for learning but it doesn't mean "smart" kids deserve a better education.

@Tre_John_son @DPearsonPHL They should! Even without the administrative day to day oversight the District should be holding all public schools to effectiveness. The Charters don't have much oversight but holding them to standards and better planning for the whole system is not a bad thing.

If we want to be a state and a city for the working class we need to make it easier to work.

We can't go on about how great non-college degree jobs are and do nothing to make it less difficult and expensive to pursue them.

@mr_saltz I know it's not your job but what would you do? If you wanted to get people back into comprehensive high schools (outside the NE)...or would you push for something different?

@KelseyTuoc @AlisonSomin I think this is a mistake...over credentialing for a profession that is already not attracting enough people and higher education faculty are bad teachers! They are taught mostly to do research not teach. The rigors of K-12 teaching is a mismatch for what they are trained for...

@RichLowry I think the domestic turn against Israel in the US will be a bigger consequence then the wins of this moment...In another generation Israel won't have US help...maybe it won't need it but I don't think they are able to control the middle east on their own.

@rw_briggs I have a subscription! I think the district has definitely had to adjust the criteria and made many mistakes but I think we have had a problematic system for the whole time.

@rw_briggs But did it? I am not sure that was the case. I think this is more about student and school preferences. Some of these schools want to be more selective! I am not sure that would help them fill seats.

@rw_briggs Not saying the process is great but these schools would be under enrolled period. This was happening at a number of the schools before enrollment changes because there are not enough students they are willing to admit and the criteria is too high.

Philadelphia needs to be a city for the working class.

A city that believes that it has to do more then have working class sensibilities at football games (Go Birds!) but commits its time, treasure, and belief to an economy that allows people to achieve and sustain prosperity.

It all starts with young people. We need to, at scale, better prepare, and connect young people to opportunities and jobs that allow them to be economically mobile. We can do it. We just have to try and not accept the status quo. Heights Philadelphia is committed to using educational and workforce opportunities at scale to create that city for young people.
