👋Hi y'all! We are the Southeast USA chapter of the Society for Freshwater Science (@BenthosNews). We hope to serve as a hub of water research and engagement in the region. If you love southeastern waters, give us a follow!
We hope everyone is excited for our meeting in Athens GA on March 25th and 26th! These amazing mussel pictures were taken by special session leaders, who will discuss their research supporting SE mussel conservation. #freshwaterscience#scienceconference#athensga#mollusks

The Giant Aquatic Salamanders project is based out of SW Georgia in isolated forested wetlands. They study spatial and food partitioning of fully aquatic salamanders(Amphiuma means and Siren lacertina). #ecology#wetlandsresearch#research
We are excited to announce that we will be having an environmental communication competition! All submissions will be posted on Instagram, bluesky and twitter. Please DM us with any questions, and look for the google form link in our bio. #environmentaled#environmentalcomm

The Corbicula Mesocosm project, from Alabama, investigated how the native freshwater mussel, Lampsilis fasciola, is impacted by increasing densities of the invasive freshwater clam, Corbicula fluminea, in varying food resource treatments.

Check out this episode from ‘The outfall’. Steve Galladay speaks on the value of mussels in the Flint river. To learn more about conservation of these incredible organisms, look for Steve and his colleagues’ special session at our March chapter meeting.

LAB SHOUTOUT 🌊🧪 The AIMS project researches intermittent streams; streams with periods of no flow. The team utilizes hydrology, macroinvertebrate/microbial community ecology and biogeochemistry to help them understand intermittent streams. #ecology#hydrology#research
Check out this freshwater inhabitant, the red swamp crayfish(Procambarus clarkii)! It is native to the gulf region and has made its way quite far globally as an invasive species.
Fun fact: They make chimneys above ground and burrow below ground. #ecology#fieldwork#research

The Atkinson lab focuses on organisms’ roles in maintaining vital ecosystem processes with the interactions and impact of flow regime alterations of waterways, land use, and climate change.
🪲Stay tuned for updates on other projects through the Atkinson lab!

StreamCLIMES researches how drying across the southern US impacts community structure, food web dynamics, and genetic connectivity of macro-invertebrates living on and below bodies of water. They’re processing Alabama watershed leaf litter breakdown samples now!
