@ArtWong128 One of those "ocean" things we all heard about as kids, like the moonlight squid spawning in Monterey Bay. Witnessed that during Dad's scuba classes, but not the grunion run. Too far south for us!
@ThisIsIreland3 My Grandaunt always said that the family was from a farm near the "White Horse Castle"...seems she got the goats mixed up with horses!!
@pitsenberger@brim006 Now there's a movie title: "Honeymoon in Monte Rio"! The movie theater was an old Quonset hut--buddies and I went to see "Gimme Shelter" when it came out. My pal's dad came along, lit up a 'Toscano' cigar from North beach and cleared out the place!!
@pitsenberger@brim006 Now, in the 60s, Monte Rio (well, at least the "Pink Elephant" bar) and other river towns had their share of the hippies and later bikers. not to thrilling for the old-timers along the river!
@RobinGalante1@TurnbullMartin Haha! When I was young, you had to "dress" to go downtown--Union Square, Market St. etc. But not at Playland or the Beach! But of course, the 30s was a different era--as was the 1880-90s! (when Grandma was a young woman).
@RGRyan777 My buddy's dad had one of those. Like riding in a "space ship"--at least one of the time that I saw on TV and in the movies!! Very "Space Age" and cool!
@pitsenberger And part of the "Columbus Day" motivation was pride for Italian-Americans, who were not exactly welcomed in the early 200th Century, being portrayed in political cartoons as rats and brutes.
@raebops Wonderful memories of kids' parties at the Fun House, where you got battered, tossed, clipped at the ankles...and had a great time!! All to the tune of Laffin' Sal--whom you could hear from a mile away!
@LaurasMiscMovie@curecosmos I was fascinated by the "North Pole"-a huge pillar of ice that stood in the village. Kids used to stand there licking it on hot days.
