Happy May Day!
From the Australian Green Bans of the 1970s that gave the Green movement its name to the modern day, our history is deeply entwined with trade unionism and working class movements across the world.
We remember that history in our fight for a just transition!
Workers today continue to face threats on all fronts; ongoing structural racism and the rise of the far right, ever growing inequality and the climate crisis.
This May Day, remember collective power is our greatest strength.
This is devastating for the workers and the community of Grangemouth.
We should have seen our Governments doing more.
It is deeply disappointing that Labour have not stepped in to protect workers or to future proof jobs in the same way that they have with steelworks down south.
When the @scottishgreens were in government I tripled the funding for @STUC_Schools. Great to speak to Terry at #STUC25 & see so many reps volunteering to help deliver the programme locally.
Young people deserve to learn about their rights in the workplace before they get there
The Easter bank holidays will give workers more time with their families and friends, or simply to relax.
That should be normal rather than being an exception.
The impact of normalising a 4 day week could be transformative for workersโ rights and for building a better future!
Alt text of the last paragraph 1/2:
We need to see Grangemouth nationalised as soon as possible, this will allow for a real just transition to take place at the refinery and save 3000 jobs with one stroke. The neoliberal orthodoxy and the multinational vultures who exploit it
We're here in Greenock for @scottishgreens conference
Looking forward to our "Do Greens Stay Radical In Power?" with @newint at 5 today, get along to Waterfront Leisure Centre for that if you're interested! It's just a short walk from the main conference venue.
Really excited to be speaking on this panel on Saturday at the Scottish Greens conference with @NiallChristie1@MccailColl@susan4leithwalk. Find out more and get your ticket below! ๐
Looking forward to hosting this event alongside comrades from the New Internationalist
There's lots to discuss about how parties like ours can live up to our radical rhetoric and deliver on our ecosocialist promise
Get yourself along if you're in Greenock at the weekend!
This weekend, New Internationalist and the @SGPTradeUnion are hosting a critical discussion on whether mainstream green parties can be trusted to deliver on their commitments to peace, social justice and environmental action.
โUnite does not accept the future of the refinery should have been left to the whims of shareholders. The governments involved cannot hide behind the convenient smokescreen that this is a commercial decision which they couldnโt influence.โ
Derek Thomson, Unite Scottish Secretary
Successive Governments should have taken action to provide a transition that put workers first.
Grangemouth is now paying the price of that inaction.
We need to see plans come forward to support workers.
I'll be back in my community later today to speak to those affected.
Absolutely gutted to hear the news.
The town and the workers deserve so much better.
I'll be in touch with unions and community organisations in the coming days.
We're glad MSPs backed the principle of universalism this afternoon by voting to maintain the no peak rail fares trial and plans for free school meals
But now it's on the trade union movement and the wider left to maintain these policies in reality, not just in principle
The principle of universalism is under attack by governments of the supposed centre left at Westminster and Holyrood
From Labour cutting the winter fuel payment to the SNP scrapping plans for all primary pupils to receive free school meals, the trend is clear
