The bathos comes into play in this scene from "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" when just at the moment when Billy is building up his big reveal about how the children are all superheroes, Pedro ruins it all by suddenly declaring “I’m gay.”
Superhero movies of the modern age did not cease existing due to “fatigue”... they ceased to exist because screenwriters became scared to leave any emotional beat in peace without ruining it with a self aware joke.
It is not witty to use a character’s coming out to be the punch line of his being a superhero. This shows that the moment and its stakes are not important enough to be shown seriously. Hollywood spent the whole decade humiliating real drama and turning every climactic moment into a joke and was left wondering why people do not care about these characters anymore.
