In Ancient Egypt, cats were revered as protectors of the home and guardians against unseen forces, closely associated with the goddess Bastet a deity of protection, sensuality, and fierce maternal energy. To harm a cat was a crime. They were seen as spiritual sentinels.

But in medieval Europe, the black cat became a symbol of witchcraft. Independence turned into suspicion. Night vision became “demonic.” Autonomy became threatening.

The cat did not change.
