@SadieSink It is a lonely existence that of a famous performer -well, I’m sure it feels like that at times. So much sacrifice to effectively communicate the language of art; a discipline you are very much a master of. Thank you for your sacrifices to bring us such mastery.
@FarLife1 It is the wave made up of space itself that moves faster than light so Relativistic Limitations are never violated by the ship ridding the wave…Space simply scrolls before the ship.
The Alcubierre warp drive achieves FTL travel by distorting spacetime around a spacecraft.
This concept creates a warp bubble that contracts spacetime in front of the spacecraft while expanding space behind it.
It’s like riding a space wave through the cosmos.
Totally gnarly.
A black fungus evolved to feeds on radiation at Chernobyl.
In the ruins of Chernobyl, scientists discovered something bizarre: a black fungus growing directly on the walls of Reactor 4 – one of the most radioactive places on Earth.
The organism, called Cladosporium sphaerospermum, doesn’t just survive radiation. It appears to feed on it.
This fungus uses a process called radiosynthesis, similar to photosynthesis in plants – but instead of using sunlight, it absorbs high-energy gamma radiation and converts it into chemical energy. It's one of the few organisms on Earth known to do this.
And it gets stranger.
When scientists sent samples of this fungus to the International Space Station, it not only survived – it grew. In fact, it formed a thin biofilm that blocked up to 84% of incoming cosmic radiation, suggesting it could one day act as a living radiation shield for astronauts.
Radiation is one of the biggest risks for deep-space travel. Traditional shielding is bulky and heavy – a major problem for long missions to Mars or beyond. A self-regenerating biological layer that grows in response to radiation? That could be a game-changer.
Back on Earth, researchers are also studying the fungus for bioremediation – using it to clean up radioactive sites that are too dangerous for humans. Its ability to tolerate and even metabolize radiation might make it a key tool for future nuclear disaster recovery.
“It’s like nature engineered a biological radiation shield,” one researcher said.
From reactor ruins to orbit, this unassuming black fungus may help us survive in the most extreme environments the universe can throw at us.

Health officials just confirmed the first-ever case of a potentially fatal and untreatable virus in New York.
The first human case of the Bourbon virus in New York has been identified in a 67-year-old Long Island man, following a retrospective study by researchers at Stony Brook Medicine.
The patient, who fully recovered, contracted the virus after being bitten by Lone Star ticks. Initially treated with standard antibiotics for suspected Lyme disease, his lack of improvement prompted further investigation.
It was only when scientists analyzed stored blood samples from over a hundred patients with tick-borne symptoms that they detected the virus, exposing an alarming reality: there is currently no vaccine, no specific antiviral treatment, and no commercial diagnostic test available to standard clinics.
Discovered initially in Kansas in 2014, the Bourbon virus represents an emerging challenge for healthcare systems on the East Coast. Because its symptoms closely mimic more common bacterial infections like Lyme disease, cases are easily misdiagnosed and might go completely undetected without specialized state or CDC lab testing. Public health experts warn that the spread of the Lone Star tick is carrying new, untreatable viral threats into densely populated regions. As vector-borne illnesses expand their reach, the case underscores an urgent need for advanced viral surveillance and the development of commercial tools to keep pace with changing environmental threats.
