Some of football's biggest names had an easier path to the top, others were never favorites to succeed.
From failing as a player, to teaching at schools, to being Bobby Robson's "translator" at Barça… to becoming an all time great.
The unknown rise of José Mourinho: [a thread]
Bielsa speaks the truth about journalists.
This is precisely why MLS/USSF didn't hire him (it had absolutely nothing to do with English speaking or any other requirement).
Those who speak truth are not allowed.
And this is precisely why they hire MLS lapdogs for positions of influence.
Credit to @JimenaJuani for captioning. I'm working on the longer 5 minutes version.
This is a presentation from the US Soccer Federation flexing their profit by multiplying ticket prizes by 5 within 20 years, giving 0 fucks that less people come to the stadiums now.
This federation sees ⚽️ purely as a money machine. Now you‘ll ask why not? They do this in Europe too and it works?
Well, in Europe the game grew for decades organically without big money. As a sport for everyone. That’s what created our huge fanbases. After that, big investors capitalized.
But in the US, they focus on profit before growing the game. ⚽️ will never be as big as they wish over there if that‘s their strategy.
Random thoughts:
1. Bryson is an entertainer AND an incredible player. What a well deserved win.
2. The bunker shot on 18 was one of the best shots ever hit in the history of major championship golf.
3. Bonkers to think that Bryson won't be on the Olympic team. His finishes this year in majors are 6th, 2nd, 1st. Nobody has been better in the majors. Even more bonkers to think he won't be on the presidents cup team. They need to fix golf because as a fan that wants the USA to field the best team, I think Bryson deserves to be there.
4. Disappointing to see Rory not stick around for media. You need to take the good with the bad.
5. It's been a long time since Scheffler was not at the top, or near the top of the leaderboard heading into Sunday. Felt weird.
6. Sure felt like there was some bias in the booth in my opinion. Not a fan of that.
7. The way Bryson engages with the fans is amazing. As a fan I absolutely prefer this over those that are heads down and emotionless. I get why they are heads down and emotionless, but as a fan, Bryson is just so entertaining.
8. Overall Pinehurst was solid. Some things I love, and some things that are not my preference. I am totally fine with run offs around the green, but when you hit a VERY high quality shot and it runs off the green and chases 30+ yards into wiregrass in the waste area, that's just silly.
9. One more major to go! Bring on Royal Troon!
This Caitlin Clark conversation from Kornheiser and Wilbon exemplifies why they have had the best sports talk show in America for nearly 25 years.
Smart. Detailed. No hot takes. Just two actual journalists with brains.
Refreshing.
The cat is finally out of the bag. As former chair (x2) of the NCAA men’s soccer committee and someone who has actually seen some Pairwise data (there’s a reason nothing has gotten out btw), here are some thoughts….🧵
