As I talk about in The Devouring, the things we bury don’t always stay buried.
Pain grows in silence. Shame grows in isolation. And pretending we’re okay doesn’t make us okay.
Mental health matters. Speaking up matters. Letting someone see what you’re carrying matters.
You were never meant to fight every battle alone.
I don’t write because I think I have everything figured out.
I write because I know what it feels like to hurt, to hide, to wrestle with faith, and to keep going anyway.
If something I write helps one person feel less alone, then it mattered.
I’m taking a little break from The Monsters Club.
Not because I’m done with it. Not even close.
I’ve got a Mrs. Claus romantasy story pulling at me right now, and with Christmas coming, it feels like the right time to follow it.
It’ll be a very different story, but the heart behind it won’t be. I still want to write about mental health, recovery, faith, shame, healing, and what happens when people finally stop hiding.
So for a little while, I’m trading monsters for magic, snow, romance, and Mrs. Claus.
But I’m still writing about people finding their way out of the dark.
You can be strong and still be tired.
You can have faith and still be struggling.
You can love God and still need help.
None of that makes you weak. It makes you human.
Please stop carrying everything alone just because you think you’re supposed to.
Speak up. Let somebody in. You matter more than the image you’re trying to hold together.
Please don’t wait until you’re completely falling apart to tell someone you’re hurting.
You don’t have to have the right words. You don’t have to explain it perfectly. Just say something.
I know how easy it is to hide the hard stuff and tell everyone you’re fine.
But silence gives pain room to grow.
Let somebody in. You are worth hearing, worth helping, and worth loving.
I've spent a lot of time lately talking with people about mental health, faith, shame, and the things we carry in silence. Every conversation reminds me why I wrote The Monsters Club. My books are fiction, but the pain behind them is real. I've lived some of it. I know what it's like to fight battles nobody sees. God didn't create us to suffer alone. Come out of the dark. You are worth hearing, worth helping, and worth loving.
@DNicholsAuthor Definitely “necessary.” I always want to add an extra C or S somewhere. I’m a novelist, for crying out loud. You’d think I’d have figured it out by now! 😂
Heavenly Father, I lift Mandii before Your throne of grace right now. Lord Jesus, You know the fear she’s experiencing and the uncertainty she’s facing. Father, I’m asking You to place Your healing hands upon her heart. Restore its strength, protect her life, and guide her doctors toward clear answers and the right treatment. Your Word tells us that You have not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. Lord, let that promise bring her peace right now. Replace her terror with Your comforting presence, and surround her with people who will care for her. Father, give her hope, give her answers, and bring healing to her body. In the mighty and precious name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Heavenly Father, I come before You in the mighty name of Jesus and lift Dawn into Your loving hands. Lord, You are the Great Physician, and nothing is impossible for You. I’m asking You for a miracle. Place Your healing hands upon Dawn, protect her brain, and keep this aneurysm from rupturing. Father, guide the doctors with wisdom and steady hands, and give Dawn and her family a peace that surpasses all understanding. Your Word tells us that You are our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Be that refuge for Dawn right now, Lord. We trust in Your power, Your mercy, and Your unfailing love. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
I’m so deeply sorry for your loss. I lost my father, and I know there’s a kind of pain that words just can’t touch. I’m glad your mom isn’t suffering anymore, but I know that doesn’t make losing her any easier. I’m praying that God wraps His loving arms around you and gives you peace and comfort in the days ahead. You don’t have to be strong right now. It’s okay to grieve. God bless you, my friend.
Well, I’m both a reader and an author, so I guess I qualify! I write psychological thrillers with supernatural elements, but at the heart of my stories are real people dealing with pain, shame, and the things we don’t talk about. I love connecting with fellow readers and writers. What are you reading lately?
My psychological thriller, The Devouring, explores what happens when pain, shame, and silence take on a life of their own. The monsters are supernatural, but the wounds that create them are very human. I wrote it because I believe nobody should have to suffer in silence. Come out of the dark. You are worth hearing, worth helping, and worth loving.
How many of you are the person everyone turns to when life falls apart, but when you're the one falling apart, nobody seems to notice?
I'm asking because I know that feeling.
And if that's you, I want you to know something. You matter, too.
When was the last time someone checked on YOU?
Over the past week, I’ve had some incredible conversations with people about mental health, shame, faith, and recovery. It’s reminded me why I started writing The Monsters Club in the first place. I didn’t write these books just to entertain people. I wrote them because I know what it’s like to carry things in the dark, and I know what that darkness can do to a person. If these stories help even one person find the courage to speak up, then every hour I spent writing them was worth it. That’s what this has always been about.
You do not have to be okay before you speak. You do not have to clean up the mess before you ask for help. You do not have to carry it alone just because you always have.
Come out of the dark.
You are worth hearing, worth helping, and worth loving.
