The Social Justice Movement strongly condemns the growing attacks against civil society organizations, human rights defenders, and citizens exercising their constitutional rights. The violent disruption of public forums discussing the 2026/2027 national budget is a dangerous attack on democracy, public participation, and freedom of expression.
Freedom of assembly and speech are constitutional rights that must be protected. Citizens have the right to engage in civic discussions, question government policies, and participate in budget-making processes without intimidation or violence.
The continued attacks on the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC), including last year's invasion of its offices by suspected pro-government goons, remain a serious concern. The government's silence and failure to ensure accountability create the impression that such violence is being tolerated.
As we approach the 2027 elections, shrinking civic space should alarm every Kenyan. Democracy thrives through dialogue, not intimidation.
